dnsjava is an implementation of the DNS protocol in Java. It supports all of the common record types. dnsjava provides both high and low level access to the resolver. The high level functions perform queries for records of a given name, type, and class, and return an array of records. A cache is used to reduce the number of queries sent. The low level functions allow direct manipulation of dns messages and records, as well as allowing additional resolver properties to be set. A 'dig' clone, dynamic update program, and basic server are also included. Extensions to the DNS protocol are supported as well (DNSSEC, TSIG, EDNS0).
GnuDIP is a application designed to allow an ISP to publish a DNS hostname for a customer without having to assign a static IP address. Customers can maintain the address information via a CGI on the ISP's website. For those who are familiar with the dyn.ml.org part this is a simple replacement package.
mkrdns is a small Perl script that helps automate changes to your DNS zone files. It does this by reading your named.boot/named.conf file to find all the domains/networks for which you are authoritative. It then reads all of the forward zone files and generates PTR records which it inserts in the reverse zone maps.
JH2N (Java host to named conversion program) converts a hosts file to a full BIND 8 or 9 configuration. JH2N was inspired by the h2n.pl program included in the O'Reilly "DNS and BIND" book. Various options are available to enhance its operation by incuding external files. Using the simple host file syntax, very large and complex zones can be maintained.
This is a simple Python script to register your dynamic IP address using the NIC V2.0 protocol. It aims to be fully compliant with the dyndns client specification. It currently supports all options and recommendations as of June 12, 2001, including myDynDNS custom domains. The script is very easy to use and supports multiple methods for determining the external IP address.
Hawk is a DNS housekeeping utility that compares what's in DNS to what's really on your network, allowing you to (re)assign IPs with confidence. It monitors the hosts on your network via ping. It can identify unauthorized address usage, or show you which addresses in DNS haven't been used in a while and can be reclaimed.
ZoneMaster is a tool for zone file and name server management. It consists of a library that can configure BIND and a Web-based user interface that is used to access the data that is stored in a database. A bootstrap script allows you to initialize the database with all necessary information retrieved from an existing configuration. All modifications are saved as jobs in the database, and a job handler makes the necessary changes from time to time. The user interface is based on XSLT-stylesheets and can be easily modified.
