PowerDNS Authoritative Server is a high-performance authoritative nameserver with a host of backends. Besides plain BIND configuration files, PDNS reads information from MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQLite, MongoDB, and many other databases. Backends can easily be written in any language, and a sample Perl backend is provided. PDNS powers around 30-40% of all domain names in many parts of the world, including >90% of all DNSSEC domains in Europe.
Dual DHCP DNS Server is a DHCP server combined with a caching DNS server that is sensitive to the names that were allocated by the DHCP server. It has built in dynamic updates, and also supports BOOTP PXE network booting and client specific options. It is self-configuring, doesn't require the creation of zone files, and uses little memory and CPU time. Either one of the two services can be turned off.
Unnamed un-names unwanted DNS entries. It was written to solve the problem of upstream DNS servers inserting bogus records for NXDOMAINs. It can be used to filter unwanted domain names like ads, porn, time wasters, etc. It is modular, so extensions are easy. Extensions can be written in Lua or compiled as shared objects.
dns.c is a recursive, re-entrant, non-blocking DNS resolver in a single .c file. It features a record-agnostic API, restartable record iterators, and smart queries which recursively follow out-of-bailiwick NS, MX, and SRV host references. It works just as well as a stub resolver, too. It also includes spf.c, a non-blocking SPF resolver with no threading, no forking, and no run-time dependencies.
GNU Libidn is an implementation of the Stringprep, Punycode, and IDNA specifications defined by the IETF Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) working group. It is used to prepare internationalized strings (such as domain name labels, usernames, and passwords) in order to increase the likelihood that string input and string comparison work in ways that make sense for typical users throughout the world. The library contains a generic Stringprep implementation that does Unicode 3.2 NFKC normalization, mapping and prohibition of characters, and bidirectional character handling. Profiles for iSCSI, Kerberos 5, Nameprep, SASL, and XMPP are included. Punycode and ASCII Compatible Encoding (ACE) via IDNA are supported.
pdnsd is a Proxy DNS server for Linux and FreeBSD that is designed to cope with unreacheable nameservers (e.g. because the dial-in link is not up) in a graceful manner to prevent DNS-dependent applications like Netscape from hanging. It has a permanent disk cache (i.e. the cache contents are saved in a file on exit) and supports parallel query and a wide variety of link uptests. It also has the ability to serve some types of locally defined records.
WAWAS is a full PHP application server. The main server core listens to any IP/port and passes data to any mounted protocol on the listener. Implemented protocols are HTTP1.1/1.0, Comet, Telnet, DNS, mail, and FTP. Each protocol runs modules that build response data based on the requests. Memory object persistence allows data and caches to be shared across protocols or time. All configuration uses XML. It can be launched as a daemon, with or without forked workers, and is nearly as fast as Apache in preliminary tests.
