Slideshow is a kiosk-style application for showing text, image, and video in a loop on monitors and projectors. It is not meant for situations where interactive control is required, but when the content is continuously looping for a long time. The content is updated through a Web GUI. The application is split into two packages, the backend and frontend. The backend is written in C++ and OpenGL. and the frontend uses Python. Currently. the frontend is very GNU/Linux specific and will not run on any other platform, but is meant to be as platform independent as possible, as long as it handles OpenGL.
Smitten differs from traditional media centres in three major ways. It contains no media playback at all, which makes it very small (and suitable for porting to embedded systems) and quick to initialize. It targets a TV display and interface, which means there's less information on any particular screen, and a much simpler control interface consisting of left, right, up, down, and select. No mouse is required. It is also highly skinnable, and cross-platform to most systems. Essentially, it provides an easy-to-use menu system that allows the user to navigate a hierarchy of files, and view them using an (external) tool.
Sonic-Rainbow is a Linux GUI multimedia player. It plays DVDs, VCDs, and video files. It plays CDs, rips CDs to Ogg, MP3, FLAC, and WAV files, and has an Ogg, MP3, FLAC and WAV player, as well as a playlist editor and a TAG editor to create and modify MP3, Ogg, and FLAC file tags. HTTP is used to download and locally store CD Info from Freedb such that the CD player, ripper, Ogg player, FLAC Player, and MP3 player are able to display CD track and artist information. The GUI playlist editor creates playlists containing single Ogg, FLAC, or MP3 files and directories of Ogg, FLAC, or MP3 files. It provides support for FM radio cards if installed.
