The Java Media Framework (JMF) is an API for incorporating audio, video, and other time-based media into Java applications and applets. It is an optional package that extends the multimedia capabilities on the Java2 platform. The Blackdown JMF is a Performace Pack which includes native code in order to provide faster processing and tighter integration with Linux than the all-Java version.

Freevo is a Linux application that turns a PC with a TV capture card and/or TV-out into a standalone multimedia jukebox/VCR/PVR/HTPC/DVR/set-top box. It uses MPlayer and other applications to play and record audio and video. It is optimized for use with a TV and remote, but can be used with a monitor and keyboard.
GeeXboX is a standalone media player Linux distribution, similar to MoviX. It's a small bootable CD that allows you to play your favorite video (DivX, XviD, H.264, MPEG 1/2, VCD, DVD, OggMedia, Windows Media, RealMedia, etc.) and audio (MP3, Audio CD, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, MPC, etc.) files. It is based on MPlayer, and can be used on any x86, x86_64, or PowerPC computer. It's easy to modify the source to build your own GeeXboX or use an alternative boot method.
Getcontrol is a GNOME 2 multimedia frontend. It aims to play DivX, DVD, MP3, Ogg, and Shoutcast streams,and also provide digital photo viewing, video conferencing, etc., all connected with your remote control and running on your TV out. It relies on Gstreamer for multimedia playback.
The Helix DNA Client is the media playback engine used by the RealOne Player. It contains standards-compliant H.263 and MP3 decoders, RealAudio and RealVideo binaries, and sample user interfaces. The media engine is capable of playing multiple streams simultaneously, maintaining synchronization between streams, and handling RTSP, RTP, and HTTP streaming network playback.
