This HOWTO explains how to extract embedded bitmaps (sbits) out of CJK TrueType fonts, generating high quality bit-mapped fonts for X11. Included are several encoding maps for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean encodings. Most CJK TrueType fonts include embedded bitmaps for 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 point sizes.

Cyrprint converts postscript files generated by netscape (original pages must be in koi8 encoding). It can be used as a pass-through filter. It adds cyrillic fonts to the beginning of the file and substitutes font names in the original PS document. The substitution and addition of fonts can be controlled with styles.

Hamster Font Manager (HFM) helps you control the avaliability of fonts in all of the supported applications from a central place. It includes modules to support X11, Ghostscript, and TeX. A PostScript module handles PS Fonts while other fonts remain untouched by this program. It features a nice Tcl/TK GUI. For X11 configuration to work, this software has to run on the machine's own X Server.

The jmk-x11-fonts package contains character-cell fonts for use with the X Window System. These fonts attempt to be practical while also remaining both legible and aesthetically pleasing. The mminstance package creates instances of PostScript Type1 multiple master fonts. (An instance is a version of the font as it looks at one point in its design space.) Mminstance lets you use multiple master fonts with programs that don't handle them directly, such as afm2tfm, ps2pdf, ps2pk, and X Type1 font servers. Mminstance contains two programs. Mmafm creates AFM font metrics from multiple master AMFM and AFM files, and Mmpfb creates a single-master font outline file (PFA or PFB) from the multiple master font itself.
