John the Ripper is a fast password cracker, currently available for many flavors of Unix, Windows, DOS, BeOS, and OpenVMS. Its primary purpose is to detect weak Unix passwords. It supports several crypt(3) password hash types commonly found on Unix systems, as well as Windows LM hashes. On top of this, lots of other hashes and ciphers are added in the community-enhanced version (-jumbo), and some are added in John the Ripper Pro.
Perso can handle different types of identity card numbers (e.g. German/Austrian ID-card and passport). It can check the numbers for correctness using the "7-3-1"-checksum algorithm. Also it can extract information from the numbers (e.g. birthday) or generate example numbers using custom values.
MonoDecrypt uses pattern matching and its knowledge about character frequencies in order to decrypt messages encoded with a monoalphabetic substitution cipher. MonoDecrypt can decrypt texts of any language, as long as it has sufficient information about the language. Depending on the information you give it, the tool decrypts about 50%-100% on its own. Then you can decrypt the remaining data by filling the gaps or correcting bad guesses. MonoDecrypt can also encrypt texts using monoalphabetic substitution.
alph implements and analyzes historical and traditional ciphers and codes, such as polyalphabetic, substitutional, and mixed employing human-reconstructable algorithms. It provides a pipe filter interface in order to encrypt and decrypt block text to achieve transparency. The program is meant to be used in conjunction with external programs that transfer data, resulting in transparent encryption or decryption of information. The program can thus be used as a mail filter, IRC filter, IM filter, and so on.

Lost in Translation is a steganographic encoder that exploits the possibilities of steganographically embedding information in the "noise'' created by automatic translation of natural language documents. Because natural language translation inherently creates plenty of room for variation, it is ideal for steganographic applications. Also, because there are frequent errors in legitimate automatic text translations, additional errors inserted by an information hiding mechanism are plausibly undetectable and would appear to be part of the normal noise associated with translation.
