gzip (GNU zip) is a compression utility designed to be a replacement for 'compress'. Its main advantages over compress are much better compression and freedom from patented algorithms. The GNU Project uses it as the standard compression program for its system.

PBZIP2 is a parallel implementation of the bzip2 block-sorting file compressor that uses pthreads and achieves near-linear speedup on SMP machines. The output of this version is fully compatible with bzip2 1.0.2 or newer (ie: anything compressed with PBZIP2 can be decompressed with bzip2).

Cromfs is a compressed read-only filesystem for Linux. Cromfs is best at archiving gigabytes of big files that have a lot of redundancy. It aims primarily at achieving a strong compression, even at the cost of memory and CPU time resources. It uses the LZMA compression algorithm from 7-zip and block merging.

LZO Stream Library provides a stream API with LZO compression. The interface is the same as that of the Zlib library. Adler CRC from the LZO library is used to enforce data integrity.

bzip2 is a portable, lossless data compressor based on the Burrows-Wheeler transform. It achieves good compression and runs on practically every (32/64-bit) platform in the known universe. The compression engine is also available as a library (libbz2), should you desire a programmatic interface.

zlib is designed to be a free, general-purpose, legally unencumbered, lossless data-compression library for use on virtually any computer hardware and operating system. The zlib data format is itself portable across platforms. Unlike the LZW compression method used in Unix compress(1), the compression method currently used in zlib essentially never expands the data. (LZW can double or triple the file size in extreme cases.) zlib's memory footprint is also independent of the input data and can be reduced, if necessary, at some cost in compression.

GNU `tar' saves many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore individual files from the archive. It includes multivolume support, the ability to archive sparse files, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives and special features that allow `tar' to be used for incremental and full backups. It also includes `rmt', the remote tape server (the `mt' tape drive control program is in GNU `cpio').

NexentaStor is a unified storage solution that installs on standard hardware and provides enterprise class storage at a fraction of the cost of legacy, proprietary storage solutions. NexentaStor is particularly well suited for virtualized environments thanks to the ability of NexentaStor to eliminate duplication of primary data storage, to manage the storage for virtual environments from one interface, and to leverage SSDs to address the random I/O and boot storm issues with virtual environments.

The dump package contains both dump and restore. Dump examines files in a filesystem, determines which ones need to be backed up, and copies those files to a specified disk, tape or other storage medium. The restore command performs the inverse function of dump; it can restore a full backup of a filesystem. Subsequent incremental backups can then be layered on top of the full backup. Single files and directory subtrees may also be restored from full or partial backups.
