The RAZip bitstream format was designed to provide a faster random access to compressed data than what is currently possible using the GZIP format. Its major features include fast random access to compressed data, freedom from patents, single-pass coding/decoding using a bounded amount of intermediate storage, the ability to choose from one of many algorithms for compression, encryption, or error correction, and comprehensive support for Unix file metadata, Macintosh file metadata, and arbitrary file metadata.
RabbIt is a mutating, caching Web proxy used to speed up surfing over slow links like modems. It does this by removing advertising and background images and scaling down images to low quality JPEGs. RabbIT is written in Java and should be able to run on any platform. It does depend upon an image converter if image scaling is on. The recommended image converter is "convert" from the ImageMagick package.
Various archive formats can be created, extracted, tested, listed, searched, compared, and repacked by patool. The advantage of patool is its simplicity in handling archive files without having to remember myriad programs and options. The archive format is determined by the file(1) program and as a fallback by the archive file extension. patool supports 7z (.7z), ACE (.ace), ADF (.adf), ALZIP (.alz), APE (.ape), AR (.a), ARC (.arc), ARJ (.arj), bzip2 (.bz2), CAB (.cab), COMPRESS (.Z), CPIO (.cpio), deb (.deb), DMS (.dms), FLAC (.flac), gzip (.gz), ISO (.iso), LRZIP (.lrz), LZH (.lha, .lzh), LZIP (.lz), LZMA (.lzma), LZOP (.lzo), RPM (.rpm), RAR (.rar), RZIP (.rz), SHN (.shn), tar (.tar), XZ (.xz), zip (.zip, .jar), and ZOO (.zoo) formats. It relies on helper applications to handle those archive formats (for example bzip2 for BZIP2 archives). The archive formats tar, zip, bzip2, and gzip are supported natively and do not require helper applications to be installed.
ZZIPlib provides read access on ZIP-archives. The library uses only the patent-free compression-algorithms supported by zlib. Functions are provided that transparently access files being either real files or zipped files, both with the same filepath. The zip-archive can be used in the place of a normal subdirectory. It is written in portable C.
PBZIP2 is a parallel implementation of the bzip2 block-sorting file compressor that uses pthreads and achieves near-linear speedup on SMP machines. The output of this version is fully compatible with bzip2 1.0.2 or newer (ie: anything compressed with PBZIP2 can be decompressed with bzip2).
zlib is designed to be a free, general-purpose, legally unencumbered, lossless data-compression library for use on virtually any computer hardware and operating system. The zlib data format is itself portable across platforms. Unlike the LZW compression method used in Unix compress(1), the compression method currently used in zlib essentially never expands the data. (LZW can double or triple the file size in extreme cases.) zlib's memory footprint is also independent of the input data and can be reduced, if necessary, at some cost in compression.
J7Z is an alternative 7-Zip GUI. 7-Zip is a high-compression file archiver designed by Igor Pavlov. Use J7Z if you want to: update existing archives quickly; backup multiple folders to a storage location; create or extract protected archives; and lessen effort by using archiving profiles and lists.
