S3QL is a file system that stores all its data online. It supports Amazon S3, Google Storage, and OpenStack and effectively provides you with a hard disk of dynamic, infinite capacity that can be accessed from any computer with Internet access. S3QL provides a standard, full featured Unix file system that is conceptually indistinguishable from any local file system. Additional features include compression, encryption, data de-duplication, immutable trees, and snapshotting, which make it especially suitable for online backup and archiving. The design favors simplicity and elegance over performance and feature-creep. Care has been taken to make the source code as readable and serviceable as possible. Solid error detection, error handling, and extensive automated test cases are provided.
Various archive formats can be created, extracted, tested, listed, searched, compared, and repacked by patool. The advantage of patool is its simplicity in handling archive files without having to remember myriad programs and options. The archive format is determined by the file(1) program and as a fallback by the archive file extension. patool supports 7z (.7z), ACE (.ace), ADF (.adf), ALZIP (.alz), APE (.ape), AR (.a), ARC (.arc), ARJ (.arj), bzip2 (.bz2), CAB (.cab), COMPRESS (.Z), CPIO (.cpio), deb (.deb), DMS (.dms), FLAC (.flac), gzip (.gz), ISO (.iso), LRZIP (.lrz), LZH (.lha, .lzh), LZIP (.lz), LZMA (.lzma), LZOP (.lzo), RPM (.rpm), RAR (.rar), RZIP (.rz), SHN (.shn), tar (.tar), XZ (.xz), zip (.zip, .jar), and ZOO (.zoo) formats. It relies on helper applications to handle those archive formats (for example bzip2 for BZIP2 archives). The archive formats tar, zip, bzip2, and gzip are supported natively and do not require helper applications to be installed.
dtrx intelligently extracts many different archive types. It will get the contents from tar, zip, rpm, deb, and cpio archives, as well as compressed files, with one simple command. It helps keep your filesystem sane by putting every archive's contents into a dedicated directory, and making sure the owner can read and write whatever's extracted. It can even recursively extract archives.
archivemail is a tool written in Python for archiving and compressing old email in mailboxes. It can move messages older than the specified number of days to a separate mbox-format mailbox that is compressed with gzip, or optionally just delete old email. It supports archiving IMAP, mbox, MH, and maildir format mailboxes.
Python-LZO provides Python bindings for the LZO data compression library. You can access the LZO library from your Python scripts thereby compressing ordinary Python strings. LZO is a portable lossless data compression library written in ANSI C. It offers pretty fast compression and *very* fast decompression. Decompression requires no memory. In addition there are slower compression levels achieving a quite competitive compression ratio while still decompressing at this very high speed.
Pysync has both a demonstration implementation of the rsync and related algorithms in pure Python, and a high speed librsync Python extension. The pure Python is not fast and is not optimized, however it does work and provides a simple implementation of the algorithm for reference and experimentation. It includes a combination of ideas taken from librsync, xdelta, and rsync. The librsync Python extension is less flexible and harder to understand, but is very fast.
Archive is a fully drag-and-drop multi-format archiver. Drag a directory onto it to create an archive. Drag an archive onto it to extract to a directory. It can also compress and decompress streams (for example, you could drag a .gz file onto Archive and from Archive into your text editor).
clink replaces duplicate files in Unix filesystems with symbolic links. It can achieve good space savings, for example on automatically-generated directory structures, such as compiling toolchains. It is fast; it reads each file only once, and its runtime is mainly the time taken to read files. It also consumes very little RAM and is very easy to use.
Versatile Encoder allows you to encode your own videos into good quality DivX files. The input can be a sequence of files (as generated by blender), a single file (if you want to recompress something), or a VCD (if you need to back up a movie). This piece of software tries to guess good defaults and to help the user in making choices.
