S3QL is a file system that stores all its data online. It supports Amazon S3, Google Storage, and OpenStack and effectively provides you with a hard disk of dynamic, infinite capacity that can be accessed from any computer with Internet access. S3QL provides a standard, full featured Unix file system that is conceptually indistinguishable from any local file system. Additional features include compression, encryption, data de-duplication, immutable trees, and snapshotting, which make it especially suitable for online backup and archiving. The design favors simplicity and elegance over performance and feature-creep. Care has been taken to make the source code as readable and serviceable as possible. Solid error detection, error handling, and extensive automated test cases are provided.

The .xz file format includes headers and checksums, and also includes data filters (LZMA2) that can increase compression further.
Opendedup is a deduplication-based filesystem and block device designed to provide inline deduplication and flexiblity for applications. It benefits services such as backup, archiving, NAS storage, and Virtual Machine primary and secondary storage, and can be deployed in both a stand alone and distributed, multi node configuration. Standalone, it provides inline deduplication, replication, and unlimited snapshot capabilities. In a multi-node configuration, it adds global intra-volume deduplication, block storage redundancy, and block storage expandability. and will store and share unique data blocks with other volumes within the cluster. These volumes can also specify a level of redundancy for data stored in the cluster.
WavPack is a completely open audio compression format that provides lossless compression, high-quality lossy compression, and a unique hybrid compression mode. The lossless compression ratio depends on the source material, but generally is between 30% and 70%. The hybrid mode provides all the advantages of lossless compression with an additional feature. Instead of creating a single file, this mode creates both a relatively small, high-quality lossy file that can be used all by itself, and a "correction" file that (when combined with the lossy file) provides full lossless restoration. WavPack employs only well known, public domain techniques in its implementation. Methods and algorithms that have ever been patented are specifically avoided. This ensures that WavPack encoders and decoders will remain open and royalty-free.

The advantage of patool is its simplicity in handling archive files without having to remember myriad programs and options. The archive format is determined by the file(1) program and as a fallback by the archive file extension. patool supports 7z (.7z), ACE (.ace), ADF (.adf), ALZIP (.alz), APE (.ape), AR (.a), ARC (.arc), ARJ (.arj), bzip2 (.bz2), CAB (.cab), COMPRESS (.Z), CPIO (.cpio), deb (.deb), DMS (.dms), FLAC (.flac), gzip (.gz), ISO (.iso), LRZIP (.lrz), LZH (.lha, .lzh), LZIP (.lz), LZMA (.lzma), LZOP (.lzo), RPM (.rpm), RAR (.rar), RZIP (.rz), SHN (.shn), tar (.tar), XZ (.xz), zip (.zip, .jar), and ZOO (.zoo) formats. It relies on helper applications to handle those archive formats (for example bzip2 for BZIP2 archives). The archive formats tar, zip, bzip2, and gzip are supported natively and do not require helper applications to be installed.
excat is a simple tool that auto-detectd (potentially nested) compressed file formats and decompresses any combination of them using libarchive, thus unifying zcat, bzcat, lzcat, xzcat, etc. in a single (static, if you need it) binary. It may act as a drop-in replacement for any *cat.
lzo-java is a Java port of liblzo2, a portable lossless data compression library. It provides block and stream interfaces to the lzo1x, lzo1y, and lzo1z algorithms, and it can handle raw and lzop file formats. The implementation is designed for high performance reading and writing, and simplicity of integration. It is integrated with Hadoop for high performance, and transparent compression is included.
