YAJNGI (Yet Another Java NewsGroup Inspector) is a client-side service that allows you to keep tabs on a set of newsgroups without having to read constantly. You will be alerted only when the configuration finds your match. YAJNGI inspects a set of Usenet newsgroups using a perfect keyword, a regexp, or any phrases that you choose. It is multi-threaded and permits a different scan interval and actions for each group. It could be used to monitor newsgroups for your name, product, your favorite arguments, for downloading your favorite newest pictures or binary files, or any other topic of interest.
Remote HellaNZB GUI is a small GTK+ application to control your HellaNZB daemon. It's well integrated into your desktop. In a few clicks, you can manage your remote (or local) queue: add NZB files from your computer or from their newzbin.com ID, set priorities, see the progress of your downloads, etc. Unlike other similar projects, this one can truly add NZB files from your computer to your remote daemon; to do so, it copies them through SSH. For Remote HellaNZB GUI to work you need a running HellaNZB daemon; it does not configure it for you.
Korallenriff is a program that collects input from different network sources and stores their data into one database. For example, it can receive POP3 mail or can fetch NNTP groups and store the received messages in a database. One can then, for example, use the database data within a Web site to display the latest postings of a newsgroup or to create an online mailing list archive. Another possible use would be to build a blogging-software where one can post via email.
SABnzbd is a cross-platform binary newsreader written in Python. It simplifies the process of downloading from Usenet dramatically, thanks to its friendly Web-based user interface and advanced built-in post-processing options that automatically verify, repair, extract, and clean up posts downloaded from Usenet. It also has a fully customizable user interface, and offers a complete API for third-party applications to hook into.
LottaNZB aims to simplify and automate downloading of binary news from Usenet. You can tell it what to download using NZB files, which are created by many Usenet search engines. It integrates nicely with GNOME desktops, but is not limited to them, and uses the mature SABnzbd software as its foundation.
nntpfs is a FUSE module for mounting the data offered by NNTP servers. Read-only access to the servers is provided. The Network News Transfer Protocol or NNTP is an Internet application protocol for the distribution of news and occasionally binary files. Usenet represents the most common usage of the NNTP protocol. The Filesystem in Userspace (FUSE) interface allows user application code to create its own filesystems and publish them using kernel support.
Urd is a Web-based Usenet binary download manager. It stores the newsgroup information in a MySQL database and aggregates the articles into sets of a single download (e.g. one album or movie). The Web interface can be used to search with regular expressions. It uses its own downloading daemon that has support for scheduling downloads and updating databases. URD can also download directly from NZB files and even create NZB files. Further features include custom scripts, multiple languages, a template based Web interface, support for multiple servers, automatic par2 and unrar support, and an intuitive user interface.
zfec is a fast, portable, and programmable implementation of erasure coding. It includes a C library, a Python library, and a command-line tool. Erasure coding is also known as "forward error correction", which is the generation of redundant blocks of information such that if some blocks are lost then the original data can be recovered from the remaining blocks. The RAID-5 algorithm is an erasure code, but while RAID-5 can recover from the loss of any one element, zfec can be parameterized to choose in advance the number of elements whose loss it can tolerate.
