KernelKit is a Knoppix derivative dedicated to developers of Linux device drivers and Free Software embedded systems. In particular, it includes uClibc cross-compiling toolchains for several embedded architectures (currently arm, armeb, i386, mips, mipsel, PPC, m68k and sh4) and emulators (currently qemu and SkyEye). It can be used for demonstration or training purposes, or by developers who cannot install GNU/Linux on their workstations.
Myrinix is a multi-purpose portable Linux distribution based on Debian Sid. It can be installed on a live CD, USB drive, or even a Windows XP NTFS partition without modifying the MBR. Myrinix also supplies a series of application modules that can be easily added to a live CD or portable drive for more functionality.
OpenLab is the oldest African-developed GNU/Linux distribution. Started in 2001, it has built up a well-deserved reputation for ease-of-use, innovation, and user-oriented design. It was originally developed as a niche solution for the education sector, but has grown into a complete desktop operating system well suited to the home desktop, small business, and many other environments. Developed using principles from extreme programming, with constant involvement of a wide-range of participants in the process with frequent re-evaluation of designs, OpenLab is an innovative, vibrant, and above all fun platform that continuously evolves to meet the real needs of the desktop market.
Finnix is a small, self-contained, bootable Linux CD distribution ("LiveCD") for system administrators, based on Debian testing. You can use it to mount and manipulate hard drives and partitions, monitor networks, rebuild boot records, install other operating systems, and much more.
Linux Multimedia Player is a tiny Linux-based live distribution that converts your computer into a multimedia player. It supports most of the known formats (MPEG 1 and 2, DivX, WMV, qt-mov, Real, MP3, WAV, WMA, Ogg, VCD, and DVD), acts as an MP3 streaming server, auto-detects the various partitions on IDE, SATA, and SCSI hard disks, and auto-detects sound, video, and network cards. It supports all cards as of kernel 2.6.21. Network support can be configured in the GUI. Options are menu-driven and require no knowledge of Linux.
Puppy Linux is a Linux distribution that is about 100 megabytes, yet it includes a complete set of graphical applications, combined with extensive utility applications. Puppy was created from scratch, file-by-file, optimized for size at every step. Instant-Grid is a Knoppix-based live-CD bundled with a pre-configured grid environment based on the Globus Toolkit. One PC started from this CD becomes the Instant-Grid frontend. It also functions as a PXE boot-server, allowing other PCs in the same local network to boot the Instant-Grid environment. Together with the frontend, these PCs automatically form a working test grid. Like with the original Knoppix, the existing configuration of the participating PC is not touched (except maybe for enabling the PXE boot-option), and remains instantly available by a simple reboot.
Olive is a GNU/Linux live distribution which uses several unusual technologies, as well as some of the more common pieces of software. The init scripts use a new scripting langugage, and run in parallel for faster start-up, while satisfying dependencies. It uses the UniPKG package manager, a compressed ramdisk, Keith Packard's X server, and many features of the 2.6 series of kernels. Olive is designed to display how easy to use Linux may be, yet without losing any of the features required for heavy-duty work.
