Erni replaces "su {user} -c {command}" that root uses to run commands as nonroot users, because this method requires that {user} have a valid login shell, leaving another avenue open to abuse the account. With Erni, {user} need not have a valid login shell, {user}'s group memberships may be specified on the command line, and {command} may be chroot'd. It may be used to kick off daemons and also to run interactive tools (e.g. an SQL browser) as the target user.

cdvtoc is a simple utility for creating Solaris VTOC records suitable for building bootable CDs on Sun SPARC systems. The utility will create a VTOC that is aligned to cylinder boundaries and display the padding required for each component of the ISO. If required, the utility will stitch all the components together with the new VTOC to create your ISO file.

Enforcer is a Linux security module designed to help improve integrity of a computer running Linux. The Enforcer provides a subset of Tripwire-like functionality. It runs continuously and as each protected file is opened its SHA1 is calculated and compared to a previously stored value. The Enforcer is designed to integrate with TCPA hardware to provide a secure boot when booted with a TCPA enabled boot loader. TCPA hardware can protect secrets and other sensitive data (for example, the secrets for an encrypted loopback file system) and bind those secrets to specific software.

The cryptoswap package supports creating an encrypted swap partition when a system boots. This may be necessary on systems that use encrypted filesystems because plaintext secrets may be written to disk when memory is swapped to disk. The project also includes the ability to build a Linux initrd that supports booting with an encrypted root filesystem.

Netplug is a Linux daemon that manages network interfaces in response to network cables being plugged in and out. If you're familiar with Windows XP, which just does the Right Thing when you plug an ethernet cable into a laptop, netplug will need no further explanation. Basically, netplug brings up an interface and runs a DHCP client when a cable is plugged into that interface, and it brings the interface down when the cable is unplugged. On a typical Linux system or laptop, you have to run a command (such as "/sbin/ifup") manually to handle these events, but netplug automates this for you.

DOCSIS Server is a DHCP/TFTP/TOD/syslog server that uses MySQL as a backend. If you have a DOCSIS Cable Modem headend, you can use this server to boot up cable modems and assign IP addresses to customer premise equipment. With a little bit of tweaking you could also use it as just a DHCP server attached to a MySQL database. It was designed to boot up more than 150 modems per second.

INSERT (the Inside Security Rescue Toolkit) aims to be a multi-functional, multi-purpose disaster recovery and network analysis system. It boots from a credit card-sized CD-ROM and is basically a stripped-down version of Knoppix. It features good hardware detection, fluxbox, emelfm, links-hacked, ssh, tcpdump, nmap, chntpwd, and much more. It provides full read-write support for NTFS partitions (using ntfs-3g), and the ClamAV virus scanner (including a fairly recent signature database and a GUI). It provides partition handling with gParted and also has a network boot facility.

Thinux is a thin-client server on a live CD. It boots a network of diskless computers to automatically start an application such as a Web browser. Each thin client machine acts as a cluster node to share its processing and memory resources with each other to take the load off the server. It is a turnkey solution that does not change nor rely on your existing systems to run. By booting from a removable CD, it does not lock-in the user so it is convenient to test. It is ideal for any organizations that require large deployment of software automatically and cost effectively.
