Bastrama is a command line tool to manage backup files that are stored on hard drives. It implements an infinite grandfather-father-son strategy by deleting a defined subset of all backup files, saving space while the files remains accessible in multiple versions (aka "virtual tape rotation").

Random Access Backup (RAB) is a simple backup system featuring backups to removable media, like DVD RAM, MO media, and CD. Files to be backed up are first written to a removable medium. When enough files have accumulated, RAB writes a checkpoint of the current backup state to CD. The primary part of RAB is a library which may be used to create customized backup applications for your special needs.

No-install Unix Tools for Windows is a collection of 18 of the most useful Cygwin tools packaged into a single 1.1MB (floppy sized) EXE file that runs without any installation process. Simply running the executable instantly creates a Unix environment for Windows, without making any persistent changes to the underlying system. It includes bash, less, gzip, grep, find, df, du, ls, cat, cp, mv, ps, rmdir, mkdir, rm, pwd, and tar.

The poor man's daily snapshot, glastree builds live backup trees with branches for each day. Users directly browse the past to recover older documents or retrieve lost files. Hard links serve to compress unchanged files, while modified ones are copied verbatim. A prune utility effects a constant, sliding window. It is implemented as a set of Perl scripts.

rsync-backup automates the process of backing up multiple systems to one or more backup servers. It focuses on making the process secure. It encrypts the backup going across the wire, only ships changed data, runs the server as root to preserve permissions and ownership, keeps people from seeing each other's backups, and doesn't require the server to trust any files sent from the clients. It doesn't ship password files, key files, nor other sensitive files across the wire, but backs them up locally instead. Admins may use one key for everyone (backups named after the client IP) or allow named backups (when a machine may change IP or when multiple independant backups may need to be made from one machine).

Dirvish creates a backup image of a directory tree using rsync. If there is already an older backup image, files which have not changed will be shared (hard-linked) between the two backups to save disk space. Where files have partially changed, rsync sends only the differences over the network. Each backup image is a complete copy of the original directory and can be used independently for restores, or deleted without affecting the other images.

duplicity is an incremental backup tool that backs up files and directories by building tar-format volumes and uploading them to a file server. By default, these volumes will be GPG encrypted, although simple gzipping is also supported. It supports local, FTP, and ssh/scp back-ends. Because it uses librsync, archives only record the parts of files that have changed since the last backup. It supports deleted files, full Unix permissions, directories, symbolic links, and fifos, but currently not hard links.
