Mondo Rescue archives Linux and Linux/Windows systems to tapes, CDs, DVDs, USB devices, or ISO images that may be used to restore some or all of your OS and data in the event of catastrophic data loss, or for cloning a system. The emphasis is on stability and ease of use. Currently, ext2, ext3, ext4, (v)fat, minix, ReiserFS, XFS, and JFS filesystems are supported, as are RAID, DM, Multipath, and LVM.
multicd provides an easy way to backup a large number of files to multiple CDs or DVDs. Give multicd the files/directories you want backed up and it will create as many CDs or DVDs as it needs to, prompting the user to put in a new disc whenever needed. It can be configured to run in a multi-threading mode, where it will burn one image to a disc while it is copying files to another image. This feature can be disabled for slower machines.
nfsbu consists of two scripts written in Perl to help automate backing up data between two servers via an NFS mount. Its features include error reporting via e-mail, automatic NFS mount/unmount, error-checking to prevent NFS from causing a hang (as can be happen when the NFS server dies or doesn't respond), directories to back up can be listed in the configuration file, and either use the same or alternate destination directories on the backup server.
CD-R/W discs can be written with a technique called packet or incremental writing. This allows transparent and buffer-underrun-free recording for CD recorders that support this method. No more mastering of .iso images; just mount your CD-ROM read/write and copy files directly to it.
plbackitup is a simple Perl script for backing up directories/files to a tarball. It has support for many filesystem types (Reiserfs, Btrfs, Ext2/3/4, HFS+, ISO-9660, Squashfs, UDF, XFS, JFS, UFS2, CIFS, MS DOS, NTFS, and VFAT) and contains several utilities for system recovery. It also has IDE/SCSI/SATA, RAID, LVM2, and Ethernet/Wireless network support.
