Audiality is a highly scalable and portable audio engine and synthesizer. MIDI files are used in combination with scripting and modular synthesis, to minimize file sizes and maximize flexibility. Audiality can be used as a music and sound effects player in multimedia productions, or as a realtime MIDI synthesizer.
Csound is a powerful and yet easy to use musical synthesis package. Csound was constructed in the tradition of so-called music-N languages, among which the best-known is Music V. It consists of an orchestra- and score-driven executable, written in C for portability. Since Csound is a computational language, it is highly flexible and efficient; complexity is gained only at the expense of computation power. Basically, Csound reads some files and creates the result as a sound file on disk or, on faster machines, in real time through a DAC.
WaveSurfer is a sound visualization/manipulation tool for novice and advanced users, with a simple and intuitive user interface. It can be adapted to different tasks, such as speech research and education, speech/sound analysis, and sound annotation/transcription. You can also make more advanced/specialized applications by extending it with custom plugins or embed WaveSurfer components in other applications. Its flexible interface handles many different file formats, and it runs on many flavors of Windows and Unix. It also supports encoding and Unicode with unlimited file size, and more.
The CMU Midi Toolkit (CMT) is a collection of software for writing interactive MIDI software in C. It includes a number of handy utilities along with an application "shell" that provides timing, scheduling, and MIDI interfaces that are portable across DOS, Mac, SGI, and Amiga platforms.
Frocor, the F Resonating Objects Correlator, is a sound- graphics installation. It is based on some parallels between sounds and geometric objects, such as volume and size, frequency and color, etc. Changes of properties of a Frocor object will result in changes of both the graphics and the sound output.
FMS is a tool to create all kinds of sounds from scratch. You can play any sound (sine, triangular, vowels, etc.) with any property settings (frequency, volume, balance, sweep, etc.) and modulations thereof. It also features tools to save sounds, play .MUS music, graphically display sounds, and make real noise.
bcr beats is a beat slicer that lets you cut up and play with an audio sample: you can trigger slices and loops with MIDI or the mouse and keyboard, set pan, volume, and sample rate values, and generally have lots of fun. The interface is based on the Behringer BCR2000 MIDI controller, which means lots of knobs. It can be used with or without a controller.
bcr harms takes a model of the quantum harmonic oscillator and adapts it as a soft synth. It lets you hear and see how the oscillator wave functions evolve in real-time as you modify amplitudes and other parameters. The user interface is based on and integrates with the BCR2000 MIDI controller, but the application can be used without a controller.
