NetInfo is a directory service that was developed at NeXT Computer, Inc. Until LDAP, it was one of the only extensible, hierarchical, attribute-value directory services that could be used for managing NIS information. NetInfo was architected by the same person that designed NIS. Our port of Apple's Darwin NetInfo code includes an nss_netinfo module which integrates NetInfo with the GNU C Library, for transparent resolution of users, hosts, etc.

The NetKit distribution contains the following programs: biff, comsatd; finger, fingerd; ftpd; inetd, ping; rpc.bootparamd; ftp; talk, talkd; routed, ripquery; rpcgen, rpcinfo; rup, rusers, rpc.rusersd; rwall, rpc.rwalld; ruptime, rwho, rwhod; telnet, telnetd; tftp, tftpd; timed, timedc; write, writed. Each group of programs can be downloaded separately, or all can be downloaded at once by getting the "netkit-combo" package. glibc systems do not need netkit-rpc. Please note that NetKit is not the same as net-tools.

NetMage is a Java-based game that lets two people play Magic: The Gathering (or other card games) over a TCP/IP connection. It does not know how to play the game, but it does let you play if you know how (a la Apprentice).

The NetPacket::* bundle of modules disassemble network packets into a Perl hash for various Internet protocols. There are hooks for assembly of packets, but they have not been implemented in this version. At present, decoding for the following protocols has been implemented: Ethernet, ARP, ICMP, IGMP, IP, UDP, TCP.

NetSpades is a networked implementation of the card game spades for one to four players. It features both a console version (using SLang) and an X version (using GTK). It includes messaging so players may chat back and forth during the game. The server can handle multiple simultaneous games.

The NetStream2000 Linux driver provides a proprietary user-land driver for Sigma Designs EM8400-based MPEG-2 decoders (i.e. NetStream2000) and GPL'd kernel modules which provide DVD access (without kernel recompilation until 2.2.15). It also includes a GPL'd DVD player with access to all DVD functionality such as menu navigation, fast forward, languages, subtitles, and so on. Finally, this kit provides an API and the documentation necessary to write customized DVD players.
