Virtual Universe

The "Virtual Universe" is a realistic, three-dimensional cyberspace and virtual reality simulation. People can meet, interact with each other, build houses and whole worlds, simulate workflows, test designs, and much more. Due to its extensive programming interface, this virtual reality environment can be used for scientific and engineering tasks such as simulation and visualization applications. It also includes a terrain generator for virtual landscapes and the Java XTools, an extensive package that contains several enhancements and improvements for Java3D and Swing.

The software contains an automated update functionality and thats what you agree to with this part of the license conditions. You agree to something very similar when you install e.g. the Java runtime - here that part of the license is necessary for Java Web Start and the update functionality.

So not only the Virtual Universe software is "evil", Java seems to be too (in your opinion).

But if you can tell us how else we should describe what is necessary for the update functionality: suggestions are always welcome!

Re: License
I think he was concerned about the actual license, to whit (from the website):

15.Notice of Automatic Downloads. You acknowledge that, by your use of
the Software and/or by requesting services that require use of the
Software, the Software may automatically download, install, and
execute software applications from sources other than Virtual
Worlds ("Other Software"). Virtual Worlds makes no representations
of a relationship of any kind to licensors of Other Software.

The idea of allowing some "other" software to download to your machine is pretty darn scary, you gotta admit.

As I said, pure FUD! To repeat it AGAIN: The Universe server of 3dchat.org can be used for free also with own worldservers, you don't have to buy anything - so whats your problem here?

Re: License
From their website:

Virtual World server - Controls building in a Virtual World and requires a Universe server to run. Available for free

Unaverse server - Runs completely stand-alone and acts as one single Virtual World, this server type is not able to control sub-servers. order now!

Universe server Controls several sub-servers, runs completely stand-alone and acts as a Virtual World server for the "Center of the Universe" area order now!

So the Virtual World server is free, but you have to buy a Universe server in order to run it.
