Virt Install

Virt Install is a command line tool built on top of libvirt that facilitates installation of virtual machines. It supports installation of KVM and Xen guests via an installation URL, CDROM, and PXE, as well as provisioning storage in a variety of formats. Other provisioning tools are provided, such as virt-clone, which can be used to clone local or remote libvirt VMs.

Release Notes: The --graphics spice option now enables spicevmc and qxl. The --disk parameter io=native|threads was added. The --vcpus option can not specify topology and maxvcpus. The --cpu option was added for configuring CPU model and features. The --graphics option was added to unify --vnc, --sdl, and spice configuration. The --print-xml option was added to skip installation and print XML.

Release Notes: This release has better OS defaults: it uses <video> VGA and <sound> AC97, if supported. There are several enhancements to virt-install. A new --watchdog option configures a virtual watchdog dev. A new --soundhw option provides more flexible sound configuration and deprecates --sound, though backwards compatibility is maintained. A new --security option configures the VM security driver. A new --description option sets a human-readable description.

Release Notes: virt-install has a new --autostart option for setting the domain autostart flag. It allows specifying --host-device with lsusb and lspci format (0x1234:0x5678 for USB, etc.) virtinst has a new 'Interface' module for building the libvirt interface.

Release Notes: When probing for OS distribution type, the tool now tests for the existence of files rather than fetching the entire file. RFC-compliant NFS URIs are accepted and converted where needed. When probing for Red Hat distribution variants, the "treeinfo" file is sought to determine initrd/kernel locations. User friendly errors are shown instead of stack traces, and bogus libvirt error messages are hidden from the console. A --noreboot flag was added to virt-install to prevent the automatic reboot at the end of install. The libvirt capabilities XML is used to determine the guest types supported by a hypervisor. A --force option was added to prevent any interactive prompting.

Release Notes: This release fixes a couple of minor bugs. XML attributes are correctly escaped in the XML. Virtual CPUs can be pinned to physical CPUs at installation time. Windows guests will be automatically configured to use localtime. Input validation was improved.
