taskbar

taskbar is a small taskbar utility for X11. It supports a program launcher menu, task list, and tray notification area. It will work with any EWMH window manager (Sawfish, Metacity, KWM, etc.). It is designed to be lightweight yet fully functional.

Release Notes: A bug in the menu handling code that would sometimes hide the menu underneath other windows has been fixed.

Release Notes: Imlib was made into an optional compile-time option (--without-imlib to disable) in order to better suit small distributions. Plugin dependencies have been fixed so they don't require taskbar's dependencies. Support for menu separators was included. An option to disable menu icons was added.

That is precisely the user group that I targeted. I use a simple system, just metacity with no clutter anywhere. I hope it does become popular. Marketing it can be a bit of a challenge however ;-)

I come from a Windows land so naturally I adapted the style. It would be rather trivial to rewrite the UI to support other styles. Let me know if you have any suggestions!

I really like that the "start button" is optional, and is off by default, since most people won't need it, I believe. The code compiles cleanly and quickly. This could become very popular with the fluxbox, openbox, whateverbox crowds (though some may be put off by the "MS Windows" look)
