Sounds pretty cheap. Any good monitor should shut down if given the wrong parameters to protect it.

svgatextmode broke my monitor
I was messing around and doing stuff with svgatextmode
without reading the manual/documentation, and when i did
something with a messed up "clocks" line my monitor broke
and now i have to get it returned. So be careful, and make
sure to read the documentation before you use it, or else
you might break your monitor too.
Although, it was a very cheap monitor.
