Release Notes: This major release is based on OpenJDK. Performance on multi-core systems was improved. A new join/fork framework was integrated. Better support for dynamic and scripted languages was introduced. Unicode 6.0.0 and ISO 4217 currency codes are now supported. Project Coin brings various improvements to the Java language, such as binary literals, underscores in numeric literals, Strings in switch statements, and many others. Various other improvements and enhancements were made.

Improved startup time and memory footprint. Sharing of read-only data between multiple running JVMs. Remote monitoring and management. A new JVM profiling API. Programmatic generation of stack traces. Support for XML 1.1 with Namespaces, XML Schema, SAX 2.0.2, DOM Level 3, and XSLT with a fast XLSTC compiler. Unicode 4.0 support.

Release Notes: In this release, there is a Java API for XML, new I/O features, and JCE, JSSE, and JAAS no longer need to be downloaded separately. There were many performance and feature enhancements in Java 2D and Swing, an image IO framework is included, print service API and logging API were added, JavaWebStart included, and a new assertions feature.
