as i understand it (i'm not an official coder or anything), masqidentd will only run from inetd or similar 'super'servers -- read the INSTALL file
I get this error starting masqidentd
Bad arg length for Socket::unpack_sockaddr_in, length is 0, should be 16 at /usr/sbin/masqidentd line 17.

That URL has an patch and a patched version to work with iptables in the 2.4 kernel series. Though I don't run it myself, I have helped someone set it up.
This program does not work with 2.4.x series kernels as it relies upon /proc/net/ip_masquerade
some irc server insists on working ident like dalnet. this works great with a mascerade ...
After trying some other programs (wich I could'nt get to work) I found this one, it's EASY to setup but more importantly - IT WORKS!
The cool part is that when someone (a user behind the IPMASQ-b0x) tryes to connect to for e.g. a IRC-server with a program that has its own IDENT-server (ie MIrc) MASQIDENT simply just requests ident-info from the users OWN identserver and then forwards it to the IRC-server. This simply suited my needs 100% and I can ONLY RECOMMEND YOU TO TRY THIS GREAT PROGRAM!!
