this works but....
there are reasons for having the particular register disabled by default. Problems with older CPUs and certain multipliers, and probs if your CPU is > 1.33Ghz. For the rest it should be fine, and in my case I get about a 12C reduction in temperature with the register set and using ACPI rather than APM with a 2.4.14 kernel. (I don't recommend using the idle thing that LVCool comes with, nor the LVCool program [as is] for that matter. Modify it so that all it does is change the register. Don't change any ACPI settings etc...)

If you are interested email me and I'll send my modified version that allows you to test whether the register is set and to toggle it (on/off). It doesn't do any idle loop stuff or mess about with ACPI or scan the PCI bus etc...
