Ugly and non-functional
I tried it. A settings window appeared and asked

whether I had a lowrance, magellan or garmin GPS.

As I have something else, I didn't know what to

answer. There is another settings window to specify

use of the NMEA protocol. Since the NMEA

protocol is basically a universal standard among

GPS units, it should be a choice in that initial

question.

I was able to specify NMEA protocol in the settings

later but I could not get it to communicate with my

gps unit. I don't know whether it supports gpsd.

Some different errors appeared, including what

looked like coding errors, and a dialog box

appeared which could not be removed.

This behaviour is obviously for security reasons.

But it can be easily avoided: edit the file main.tcl and replace the line

if { $UNIX && $env(USER) == "root" } {

by

if { 0 } {

Can't download update
Fine program, but the download page gets you to an update package supposed to be at http://www.ncc.up.pt/gpsman/gpsmanhtml/update_6.0.1.tgz.

It seems to fix quite a lot of nasty bugs (why not 6.0.2?), but the file is "404 Not Found" :(((

this is one of those truly unique
little programs that pops up a little window & refuses to run if you are logged in as root or creates a screenful of errors complaining about not being able to do anything when logged in as an ordinary user.
