GCompris / I Got IT

GCompris is an educational software suite with numerous activities for children aged 2 to 10. Some of the activities are game-orientated, but nonetheless still educational. These include computer discovery (keyboard, mouse, different mouse gestures), algebra (table memory, enumeration, double entry table, mirror image), science (the canal lock, the water cycle, the submarine, electric simulation), geography (place the country on the map), games (chess, memory, connect 4, oware, sudoku), reading practice, and others (learn to tell time, puzzles of famous paintings, vector drawing, cartoon making, etc.). It currently offers in excess of 100 activities, and more are being developed.

Release Notes: The hangman activity was added. The details activity was added. In the spirit of famous painting discovery, in this activity the painting is complete and the children must put painting parts on the right places. A shared whiteboard feature was added in the chat activity.

Release Notes: GCompris is almost 10 years old, and it required some deep code restructuring. The old, unmaintained gnome-canvas toolkit has been replaced with a modern Cairo-based toolkit named goocanvas. One good side effect is that GCompris can be used on big monitors and on smaller devices. Minor changes include the new graphism for the canal lock and water cycle activities, the new photo hunter activity, and more famous paintings. The animation activity allows editing previous frames at will with a timeline.

Release Notes: The color mosaic activity was crashing when a target button was clicked.

    •  12 Feb 2008 23:16

Release Notes: Many potential crashes in the key_press activity callback were fixed. The fallback directory was fixed for the English locale. The Canada region map was created for the geography country activity. There are now more than 10 voice file packages, and they are used by the algebra activity. In chess, the left lower corner square (a1 in algebraic notation) is now the dark color. Support for Urdu was added, including voices. Bulgarian voices were added.

    •  30 Oct 2007 02:48

Release Notes: A crash that happened when you clicked on an image once it is fully erased was fixed. In enumerate_create_item, a reference to a freed pixmap that could crash or display broken images in the buttons was fixed. A 'DeprecationWarning: integer argument expected, got float' message was fixed. The hack to force gnomecanvas symbols to not be stripped was fixed.

    Hi.

I'm new to Linux running GCompris on Ubuntu 9.2. My son is 3 and already speaking French and English. When I first downloaded the package I had not yet installed French language packages for the OS, and now I'm having a heck of a time finding where the french voice packages are downloaded from. So if I go to the Alphabet game, for example, even thought the language is in French, the voice defaults to English as a failover. I've found instructions for how to enable the voice packages once I get my hands on them, I just can't find where they get downloaded from? Should I delete gcompris and grab its package again from Ubuntu Software Center. Will that get the English language packages then?

I'm also wondering where gcompris installs itself (novice Linux/Ubuntu question there, probably).

    Merci pour tous!

Just an idea: how about to build in the ability to play music CDs while the program is running? For example, there could simply be buttons "play" and "stop" in the panel.
