PDF metadata seems to be more suitable for this.

pdftk allows to read or modify it.

I don't know whether there is a Postscript equivalent

however. Or maybe your indexing tool looks at

Postscript comments?

No, because then it overlaps the black color of the text. (Well, perhaps, zero-sized notes would also be a solution.) Does Postscript envisage transparent colors?

Can't you just use white as text color?

What about adding notes that are not shown in any way in a generated document (but the text is still there)?

What for? Suppose, we have some scanned pages and would like to make the document searchable (for some keywords). OCR doesn't work. The solution would be to add such transparent notes.
