Dbiff attempts to provide email notification in a form similar to biff+comsat, but without the need for a comsat daemon. Rather, a copy of each email is filtered through the dbiff program using a mail delivery agent such as procmail, and dbiff then displays a summary of the message on each of the user's terminals that has the executable bit set. dbiff can also provide a condensed format similar to that used by djb's qbiff, and a bell mode like that available in FreeBSD. The bell mode is accessible either by setting a terminal's group executable bit ('biff b' in FreeBSD) or by using a flag in the dbiff command. An option is also available to write the email message only to the most recently used terminal.
