There more than 50 new features and improvements, including the sequential reading mode that makes dar suitable for tapes, new ciphers, and compression algorithms, generation of an MD5/SHA-1 hashing file for each archive slice, sparse file handling, the ability to launch a user-defined command before and after saving some particular files or directories (to be able to back up a live database properly, for example) and many other features.
