BMP

BMP is a media player which provides a very easy-to-use interface and usage semantics for all tasks, while having extensive standards and services support under the hood (MusicBrainz, Last.fm radio/scrobbling, HAL, DBus), yet keeping the details out of the way of the user.

Release Notes: The tray icon behavior was made GNOME HIG compliant. Crashes with the GStreamer error handler and resizing columns in the playlist were fixed. Equalizer use is now optional even when the GStreamer equalizer element is installed. A few patches from pkgsrc are now included in upstream.

Release Notes: Last.fm support was improved (more functionality). Shoutcast support was improved. Support for NetworkManager, global hotkeys (X11-based, custom, or GNOME-based), and support for generic video playback (file playback, no DVD support, or similar) was added in addition to video podcasts. Bugfixes all around have been made, and responsiveness was improved by using asynchronous networking where possible.

Release Notes: This is a corrective release to the 0.40.0 release. A bug in which the library would not update changed files on a rescan was fixed. MB metadata reading was made fully compliant with the latest specifications. The dependency on libmp4v2 was dropped due to problems, and appropriate code was put in place instead. The preferences dialog was made GNOME HIG compliant.

Release Notes: A rewrite of the library backend, reorganization of the UI, improved Last.fm backend and tighter integration of Last.fm within the entire application, enhanced and debugged Podcast backend with newly added support for video podcasts using Gstreamer, initial Jamendo support, and a universal bookmarking system. The stability of the 0.40 series is incomparably higher than the 0.36 versions. The application's usability was also improved to a great degree.

Release Notes: Most changes in this release are fixes of severe bugs all over, and UI/usability improvements. Other changes include multiple downloads for podcast episodes, a "Playlist" component for playing files not in the library, and a universal bookmarking system (working across all playback sources). The Last.fm streaming protocol and Audioscrobbler Protocol 1.2 support was finalized and conforms fully to the specs. As another long-standing user issue, the space-wasting header banner was removed.

Add this to your /etc/apt/sources.list, then apt-get update;apt-get install beep-media-player. Dunno who's doing those packages, I just figured it out from the url here on freshmeat.

            GTK2 xmms port
I messed with this for a few hours tonight - finally got it to work :) - this must have been built against XFree86 4.1.0 because it kept looking for libXxf86vm.so - doesn't exist in at least my version of XFree86 4.3.0 so I worked around that - I also did a work-around so that this can be built and installed alongside the "normal" xmms for GTK+ without over-writing any files - and I also built RPMS for Red Hat (note: built on RawHide so I'll just give the SRPMS link):
