You might want to check out Scorched3D then -- it's a multi-platform scorched earth clone with full 3D environments and the same weapons as the original, plus user mods.

I'm very fond of this game too
I really like this game. And maybe, someday, I'll be tempted enough to rip into it to add a few features that I'll actually do it. :-) Mostly, I'd like to add fullscreen mode. But that will require learning lots more about SDL than I know now.
I've liked games of this nature ever since I saw the first primitive artillery game for the Apple II in integer basic, and I think this is the best one currently available Open Source one that largely works.

atanks is my favorite game
On the 286, I would play Tank Wars on dos. At the time, I was quiet young, both me and my parents would play against one another. It was one of the family games. That 286 has long been gone and history. Now that I've come across atanks, we've been playing it like we always did with Tank Wars. The thing I notice alot is that atanks is not just another clone, but they really made it unique and interesting by giving the game weapons that I've never seen before in other scorched-earth clones. They really improved on the orginial. The graphics and sounds are simply awesome. Great work and thanks!
