Release Notes: New features include a Shader interpreter, Multi-depth shadow maps (a.k.a. deep shadow maps), a port to Windows 2000, support for Linux libstdc++ version 3, a new shadow map sampling algorithm, completion of the NURBS implementation, the ability to read binary encoded RIB files, optimization and improvements to the shadow map and texture map algorithms, support for message passing functions in shaders, support for visibility, rayhittest, fulltrace SL functions, support for automatic ray traced shadows, and support for blur and width parameters in texture, shadow, and environment calls. NDC is now defined as a default space. ReadArchive now works properly. Fixes were made for a whole lot of bugs in the ray tracer, including the framebuffer display driver and many memory leaks. The memory allocator under was changed IRIX to use memory more efficiently.
Release Notes: The texture mapping is a lot faster and a lot better looking, a major problem was fixed in surface normal calculation, many improvements were made to the ray tracer engine, the shader compiler optimizes faster and better, more shading language functions have been implemented, and many other bugs were fixed.
